I Was Born in the Soviet Union

I was a delicate, sensitive and gentle soul,
I was born to LOVE,
But I was born in the Soviet Union,
And there is no room for feelings in the military.

I was a free spirit, wild, creative and sweet,
My heart was wide open and embraced the whole world,
But I was born in the Soviet Union,
And every soldier had to fit into the same template.

I loved to express myself,
To explore, to create, to be free,
But I was born in the Soviet Union,
And there was no time for frivolities like that.

I needed my teachers to be caring, supportive and humane,
I needed them to be kind with me,
But I was born in the Soviet Union,
And there is no room for compassion in the making of a solder.

I believed in love, benevolence and magic,
I saw beauty in everything and knew that life was a miracle,
But I was born in the Soviet Union,
And there is no room for unicorns or butterflies on a battlefield.

I was PURE LOVE,
But the Soviet Union was like one big military camp,
And there is no room for love in the military,
So they tried to change me, to convince me, to destroy me…

But I’ve survived…
